Meet the chef

A Detroit born native, Chef Jared grew up among a large extended family.

Dinners at his Grandma’s house were a highlight of most holidays and introduced him to the importance of good food in creating good memories. That upbringing is what drove him into hospitality and ultimately to New York City to learn how to cook.

After graduating from The French Culinary Institute, Chef Jared spent the next fifteen years working in some of the world’s top restaurants. After stints at restaurants like Eleven Madison Park and Esca, he was hired by Michael White to be the Executive Sous Chef of Alto where he was part of the team that earned two Michelin Stars. That success is what opened the next door that would forever change his life and ultimately prepare him to come back home to open Oak and Reel.

Chef Jared opened Marea restaurant with White and the Altamarea Group to critical acclaim, earning Best New Restaurant from James Beard, GQ, Esquire, and Bon Appetit. Marea also earned two Michelin Stars and retained them for the nine years while Gadbaw was at the helm.

Jared loves cooking but his favorite way to spend a day off would be tending his garden or walking through the woods with his two kids looking for things to eat. He has been fortunate in his opportunities and looks forward to paying that forward to the next generation of staff and guests at Oak and Reel.
